Why the General Assembly Matters to Me
Every four years, something special happens in the Church of the Nazarene. Something that goes beyond meetings, reports, and voting—it’s a moment when we, as a global church family, come together in worship, prayer, and purpose.
“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” — Psalm 133:1
I’ve come to see the General Assembly as more than just a formal event. It’s a spiritual homecoming. A reminder that no matter where we come from—Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, or the islands—we are one church, bound by one mission: to make Christlike disciples in the nations.
Here are a few powerful things I’ve learned about the General Assembly:
1. It’s the Church’s Highest Governing Body
The General Assembly is where major decisions about who we are and what we believe are made. According to the Church Manual:
“The General Assembly is the supreme doctrine-formulating, lawmaking, and elective authority of the Church of the Nazarene…” — Manual, Paragraph 300
It’s a huge responsibility—but one that is prayerfully and humbly carried by our global delegates.
2. It Happens Every Four Years
Every four years, Nazarenes from all over the world come together—representing more than 2.5 million members! The room is filled with voices from every language, culture, and continent. It’s a beautiful expression of the Body of Christ.
3. Big Decisions Are Made
Delegates vote on church policies, leadership roles, mission strategies, and theological matters. The things discussed here help guide our path forward as a global movement.
4. It’s a Place of Cultural and Theological Exchange
As someone from Africa, I deeply value this part. We bring our context, our stories, our challenges, and our testimonies. And in return, we listen and learn from others. It’s truly a space for mutual growth and understanding.
5. We Tackle Important Moral and Ethical Issues
From questions of social justice to the sanctity of life, delegates have honest, prayerful conversations about issues that matter to the church and to the world. This helps the Church stay both biblically grounded and socially aware.
6. Leaders Are Elected
One of the most meaningful moments is the election of our General Superintendents. These are leaders who help guide the Church with vision and integrity for the next four years.
“The General Assembly shall elect officers and organize for transaction of business.” — Manual, Paragraph 300.2
7. It’s About Fellowship, Too
It’s not all business. There’s worship, laughter, and time to reconnect. For many, it’s a reunion with friends, mentors, and fellow believers who have walked the same journey.
8. It’s Different from the General Board
It’s worth noting that the General Board meets annually to handle ongoing administrative duties. The General Assembly, however, is broader in scope and happens only once every four years.
9. Decisions Affect the Entire Church
What happens at General Assembly doesn’t stay at General Assembly. It shapes the Church globally—how we serve, how we lead, and how we respond to the world around us.
10. It Follows Orderly Process
In case you’re wondering how such a large gathering stays organized—it’s all governed by Robert’s Rules of Order. This ensures that every voice is heard and decisions are made respectfully.
“Meetings and proceedings… shall be regulated according to Robert’s Rules of Order…” — Manual, Paragraph 300.3
In Closing: Why It Matters to Us
When I look at the General Assembly, I don’t just see an event—I see a reminder of who we are:
A global family.
A movement of holiness.
A people on mission.
So, whether you’re a delegate, a pastor, a local member, or just someone curious about the Nazarene Church, I hope this gives you a glimpse into how we gather, why we gather, and who we gather for—Jesus Christ.
